Why Baby Teeth Still Matter

Even though baby teeth eventually fall out, they play an important role in guiding permanent teeth into place.

When an extraction is needed, we carefully consider:

  • Proper spacing for future teeth
  • Your child’s growth and development
  • Whether space maintenance is needed

We take a thoughtful approach to protect your child’s long-term oral health.

Helping Your Child Feel Comfortable

We understand that the idea of a tooth extraction can feel intimidating for both children and parents.

At Sweet Tooth, we:

  • Use a gentle, compassionate approach
  • Move at your child’s pace
  • Provide encouragement and reassurance throughout the visit

Our goal is to turn what could be a stressful experience into a positive one.

When Does a Child Need a Tooth Extraction?

Tooth extractions are only recommended when they’re truly necessary for your child’s health.

We may recommend an extraction if your child has:

  • Severe tooth decay that cannot be restored
  • An infection that could spread to other teeth
  • A damaged or broken tooth beyond repair
  • Overcrowding that affects proper alignment
  • A baby tooth that isn’t falling out on its own

Sweet Tooth aims to make the best long-term decision for your child’s smile every appointment.

What to Expect During the Procedure

We take a gentle, step-by-step approach to ensure your child feels safe, comfortable, and supported throughout the entire visit. Before we begin, we’ll explain everything in a kid-friendly way so your child knows what to expect and feels more at ease.

First, the area around the tooth is carefully numbed to prevent discomfort. We take our time during this step and use techniques designed specifically for children to keep the experience as smooth as possible.

Once your child is comfortable, we gently loosen the tooth and remove it with care. The procedure itself is usually very quick, and most children are surprised by how fast it’s over.

After the tooth is removed, we place gauze over the area to help stop any bleeding and begin the healing process. We’ll review simple aftercare instructions with you so you know exactly how to support your child’s recovery at home.

Aftercare and Healing

Most children recover quickly after a tooth extraction.

We’ll provide simple instructions to help your child heal comfortably, including:

  • Biting on gauze to stop bleeding
  • Eating soft foods for a short time
  • Avoiding straws or vigorous rinsing initially

If you ever have questions during healing, our team is always here to help.

Tooth Extraction FAQs

  • How long does a tooth extraction take?

The procedure is usually very quick—often just a few minutes once the area is numb. The entire visit may take around 30–45 minutes.

  • What can my child eat after an extraction?

We recommend soft foods for the first day or two, such as yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, or smoothies (without a straw). Your child can gradually return to normal foods as they feel comfortable.

  • How long does it take to heal?

Most children heal quickly, often within a few days. We’ll provide simple aftercare instructions to help ensure a smooth recovery.

  • Is bleeding normal after an extraction?

Yes, mild bleeding is normal for the first few hours. Biting gently on gauze helps stop the bleeding. If you have any concerns, our team is always available to help.

  • Will my child need a space maintainer after an extraction?

In some cases, yes—especially if a baby tooth is removed early. A space maintainer can help ensure there’s enough room for the permanent tooth to come in properly. We’ll let you know if it’s recommended.
