Orthodontics For Teens in Overland Park

Building Confident Smiles During the Teenage Years

At Sweet Tooth Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we know how important it is to find a practice that has the time to answer your questions and make your child’s dental visit one of comfort and fun.

Most patients begin orthodontic treatment between ages 9 and 16; however, this varies depending on the individual. Because adolescents still are growing, this is often the optimal time to correct orthodontic problems and achieve excellent results.

When To Schedule A Consultation

Beyond outward appearances, untreated dental problems can have a lasting impact on a teen’s oral and overall health. If you notice any of the following issues, we recommend a consultation with the Sweet Tooth team, since they could be signs your teen may benefit from orthodontic treatment.

  • Early, late, or irregular loss of their baby teeth
  • Difficulty with chewing or biting
  • Crowding or extra spacing between teeth
  • Jaws that shift or make sounds
  • Frequent biting of the cheek or the inside of the mouth
  • Teeth that meet abnormally or not at all
  • Jaws and teeth that are out of proportion to the rest of the face
  • Protrusion of teeth

Addressing these issues early helps improve both function and appearance.

Your Treatment. Your Smile.

Braces for teens has dramatically changed over the years. Braces has even become a right of passage for almost every child in America. Whether your team loves the idea of adding color to their braces or wants a “clear braces” solutions, Sweet Tooth Orthodontics is excited to build a treatment plan that’s just right for you.

Why the Teen Years Are Ideal for Treatment

By ages 11–14, most permanent teeth have erupted and the mouth is still growing, making it easier to guide teeth into proper alignment.

During this stage, orthodontic treatment can:

  • Correct alignment and bite issues efficiently
  • Take advantage of natural growth for better results
  • Help prevent more complex problems later

This timing often leads to more predictable and effective outcomes.

Orthodontic Treatment is Essential For Teens

Orthodontic problems don’t improve with age, and can become more difficult to treat as growth reaches completion. It’s ideal to treat many orthodontic problems during adolescence because the body is rapidly developing and is still malleable.

By the age of 11-13 most deciduous (baby) teeth have been lost and most of the permanent teeth have come in. This is the time when we can go to work correcting the problems that cause a bad bite (malocclusion), improper tooth spacing, and poor alignment.

Lastly and especially for teens, improved appearance can have a direct impact on self-image and lead to elevated morale. Teenagers are observant and quickly explore the social benefits that result from orthopedic treatment as they realize they are not alone.

Chances are that they will recognize some of their classmates in our office, which is an opportunity to form new friendships through shared experiences. Our teenage patients find that when their treatment is complete, they have a smile they can be proud of and reap the benefits that will last a lifetime.
