Orthodontic Emergencies

Orthodontic Emergencies in Overland Park, KS

What to Do When Braces or Appliances Cause Problems

Orthodontic emergencies can happen from time to time, especially for kids and teens with braces or other orthodontic appliances. While these situations can feel stressful, most issues are minor and can be managed at home until you are able to visit the dentist.

At Sweet Tooth Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we help families in Overland Park understand what to do when something goes wrong and when it is time to come in for care. Our goal is to keep your child comfortable and your treatment on track.

What Is an Orthodontic Emergency?

Not every orthodontic issue is a true emergency. Many problems may feel uncomfortable but are not urgent and can be handled temporarily at home.

A true orthodontic emergency may involve:

  • Severe pain that does not improve
  • Swelling or signs of infection
  • Injury to the teeth, gums, or mouth
  • Appliances causing damage to soft tissues

Other issues, such as a loose bracket or a poking wire, are common and usually manageable until your next visit.

If you are ever unsure, our team is always available to help guide you.

How to Prevent Orthodontic Emergencies

While not all emergencies can be avoided, there are steps you can take to reduce the risk.

Encourage your child to:

  • Avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods
  • Wear a mouthguard during sports
  • Follow all care instructions for braces or appliances

Preventive habits can help keep treatment on track and reduce unexpected issues.

Orthodontic Emergencies FAQs

  • Is a broken bracket an emergency?

Not usually, but it should be repaired soon to keep treatment on track. Call us to schedule a visit.

  • What should I do if a wire is poking my child’s cheek?

You can use orthodontic wax to cover the wire or gently adjust it if possible. If discomfort continues, contact our office.

  • Can my child continue wearing aligners if one is lost?

If possible, have your child wear the previous set and call us for instructions.

  • What if my child has pain after an adjustment?

Mild soreness is normal and should go away within a few days. Over-the-counter pain relief (as directed) can help if needed.
