Special Needs Dental Care In Overland Park

Effective and Safe Treatment for Children With Special Needs

Sweet Tooth has experience providing dental care to children with a wide range of special health care needs, such as high anxiety, ADHD, autism, down syndrome, and more. We offer private rooms by request and even encourage the parent to sit with them during treatment.

Sweet Tooth offers sedation options, tools, and procedures with your child in mind and our main priority is to make them feel safe, comfortable, and welcome. If your child requires more extensive dental treatment, we are partnered with the dental clinic at Children’s Mercy Hospital and will help facilitate as needed.

Preparing For A Special Needs Dental Visit

Adequate planning and communication is imperative when scheduling a dental visit for a special needs patient. It's helpful to give them plenty of notice about the visit because waiting until the last minute can lead to animosity before their visit.

Utilize video, photos, graphics, or drawings to educate so they get a clear understanding of the process and diminish worries or fears they may have. If your child still displays uneasiness, feel free to bring them in for an office tour to meet our super sweet team prior to the appointment so they know exactly what to expect.

We have books, tablets, phones, sensory toys, or other activities to keep them engaged so their mind isn’t overwhelmed with angst in anticipation for the visit. Parents are welcomed, even encouraged, to accompany their child in treatment areas to make them feel more at ease.

Early Care and Prevention

Daily oral care, routine visits, and cleanings are crucial to maintaining a healthy smile.

Children with special needs are more likely to experience oral health complications such as dry mouth, bite and crowding problems, poor jaw position, tartar buildup, gingivitis, teeth grinding, and delayed tooth development.

To avoid and prevent these oral health issues, our team will work with you to establish a preventative treatment plan and address any questions or concerns you may have.
