Dental Crowns For Kids In Overland Park, KS
Protecting and Restoring Your Child’s Smile
When a tooth is too damaged for a simple filling, a dental crown can help restore its strength, function, and appearance.
Stainless steel crowns are silver caps that cover the back baby teeth and preserve more of the tooth structure. Stainless steel crowns are often used on children who have an adjusting and growing mouth.
At Sweet Tooth Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we provide gentle, kid-friendly dental crowns designed to protect your child’s tooth and keep their smile healthy as they grow.

What Are Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns for children are custom-made caps designed to fit over a damaged or decayed tooth. These crowns are very important as they help protect the integrity of young teeth.
Made from various materials, including stainless steel and tooth-colored options, dental crowns are carefully chosen to suit your child's specific needs.
Crowns can be necessary for children in multiple situations, such as severe tooth decay, fractures, or weakened teeth.
Early diagnosis and intervention are key to preventing further complications and ensuring your child's oral health remains on track.

What Should I Expect After My Child's Dental Crown Procedure?
Immediately following the procedure, we strongly recommend refraining from eating until your child's numbness has completely worn off. Waiting until the anesthetic wears off will prevent them from accidentally biting their lip or cheek, causing injury.
It's typical for children to experience discomfort for up to 24 hours after the procedure. This discomfort is caused by the irritation of the tooth's pulp and soft tissue around the tooth.
Over the counter medicines, such as children's acetaminophen or children's ibuprofen, will help with the discomfort. It is essential to contact your child's dentist right away if the pain lingers longer than 24 hours.

When Does a Child Need a Crown?
A dental crown is typically recommended when a tooth needs more protection than a simple filling can provide. While fillings work well for small cavities, larger areas of decay or damage require a stronger, longer-lasting solution.
We may recommend a crown if your child has extensive tooth decay that has weakened the structure of the tooth. In these cases, a crown helps restore strength and prevents the tooth from breaking or needing more complex treatment later.
At Sweet Tooth Pediatric Dentistry, we always take a conservative approach. If a crown is recommended, it’s because it’s the best way to protect your child’s tooth, maintain proper function, and support healthy development as their smile grows.

Dental Crowns FAQs
Why would my child need a crown instead of a filling?
When a cavity is too large or a tooth is too weakened, a filling may not provide enough support. A crown covers and protects the entire tooth, helping prevent further damage.
How long do crowns last on baby teeth?
Dental crowns are designed to last until the baby tooth naturally falls out. They are durable and can withstand normal chewing and daily use.
Will the crown look natural?
For back teeth, stainless steel crowns are commonly used because they are strong and long-lasting. For more visible areas, we offer tooth-colored options that blend in with your child’s smile.
What happens if we don’t treat a damaged tooth?
Leaving a severely decayed or weakened tooth untreated can lead to pain, infection, or early tooth loss. A crown helps protect the tooth and avoid more complex treatment later.
How long does the crown procedure take?
In most cases, the procedure can be completed in a single visit, typically within about 45–60 minutes.
