The First Pediatric Dentistry Visit

What To Expect On Your First Visit To Sweet Tooth

There is no need to fear, Sweet Tooth is here! Let us help you ease the worry that can come with visiting the dentist for the first time. We know how important it is to find a practice that has the time to answer your questions and make your child’s dental visit one of comfort and fun.

The first dental visit is typically brief and gives your child an opportunity to become acquainted with the team in a non-threatening and friendly way. It will include a review of their medical and dental history and a thorough dental exam.

We will help your child learn what to expect by telling, showing and doing. Many parents are surprised about how much children let us do!

Recommendations From Sweet Tooth

The American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and American Dental Association recommend children have their first dental visit when the first tooth comes in, usually between six and twelve months of age.

Establishing a dental home by age one can prevent decay by beginning education and preventive care as early as possible. In the same way you establish a medical home with your child’s physician for their well-child visits, you should have a dental home established to prevent decay and handle any dental emergencies.

Preparing For the First Visit

If you didn't fill out the patient forms online, you will need to do so before the appointment so it's helpful to come prepared with the necessary information. You may go the extra mile and make your child’s first dental visit even more pleasant by utilizing the tips below:

  • Abstain from sharing unnerving tales—whether real or made up—about dentists as this only plants a seed of fear before the experience even happens.
  • Educate your child on the importance of dental hygiene so it becomes second nature to them and they can form healthy habits early on.
  • Lead by example and take your own oral health seriously—children learn from what they see.
  • Address all questions honestly and in the most age-appropriate way possible.

Sweet Tooth also has experience providing dental care to children with a wide range of special health care needs, such as high anxiety, ADHD, autism, down syndrome, and more.

We offer private rooms by request and even encourage the parent to sit with them during treatment. To learn more, visit our special needs page to see how we go above and beyond to make your child feel safe, comfortable, and welcomed.
